SAUSAGES AND SURPRISES
The air felt good as Lola stepped out onto the street. Sassy was eager to be on the move and was pulling on her harness. Bouncing with such strength that Lola was dragged forward with her.
"Slow down," she mumbled.
"Sniffies French Fries, so good."
Streaks of sunlight painted the cobblestone streets in dappled hues as Lola Ramsay hurried after Sassy, her mind churning like the Earl Grey tea she'd just left behind. Her usually calm and centered demeanor, hardened by military drills and years of rigorous discipline, was starting to waver under the weight of the revelations she had just discovered. Ric and Eddie had been spying on Betty? For Tamara? It was like some topsy-turvy game of Clue, only with cakes, crumpets, and scones as the primary weapons to commit this crime. Not forgetting Betty's knife in the back of a patron. What was the world coming to?
Beside her, Sassy strutted in her yellow service harness, her nose twitching, her ears perked up. Lola glanced down, appreciating the sight of Sassy's wrinkled face full of innocent enthusiasm. If only life were as simple as a well-dressed French Bulldog on a sunny afternoon.
A creeping sensation, like a sudden rush of air on the back of her neck, made her feel as if she was being watched. It was a sensation that had saved her life more than once on the battlefield. A sixth sense, perhaps, honed over years of danger and calculated risks. Her heartbeat quickened, her senses heightened, and her gaze darted around to scan the environment.
They were on a quaint street lined with small boutiques, cafes, and antique shops. Tourists and locals alike were out and about, enjoying the summer warmth. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There was nothing to justify the crawling of ants on the back of her neck, telling her that something was off.
"Nothing bad, get chippy?" Sassy said, catching on to Lola's unease but bouncing to pull her forward. Lola looked down at the Frenchie, appreciating the dog's keen senses.
French fries, as the British called chips, or the shop where they were sold, which was called a chippy, were one of Sassy's many favorites. "I don't know, Sass," Lola responded, "I get a feeling we're being watched. Do you sniffy anything strange?"
"Chippy and Pidgeon, quick."
Sassy, ever the opportunist, had spotted a far more pressing matter - a pigeon pecking away at some dropped French fries nearby. "Quick, need to save it." Sassy lunged toward the pigeon with all the enthusiasm of a Michelin-star chef at a food festival.
"Sassy!" Lola was jerked forward and thought it easier to go with her pal while still scanning the streets. She could still feel it, that subtle itch of danger. The feeling that she was being watched, studied, and possibly hunted. But by who and why?
With Sassy moving forward and Lola looking back, disaster was bound to happen, and Lola collided with a solid wall of muscle. A surprised yelp escaped her lips as she stumbled backward. Only, it wasn't a wall.
